Welcome to the Cardiac & Veinworx Knowledge Center

If you have questions about your heart health, circulation, or vein conditions, you're not alone. Every day, patients ask us about symptoms such as chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, leg swelling, varicose veins, spider veins, dizziness, fatigue, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and poor circulation. Others want to know when they should see a cardiologist, whether they are at risk for heart disease, or which tests—such as an electrocardiogram (EKG), echocardiogram, stress test, Holter monitor, vascular ultrasound, or peripheral artery disease (PAD) screening—may be appropriate for them.

The Cardiac & Veinworx Knowledge Center was created to answer these questions in clear, patient-friendly language while providing medically accurate, evidence-based information. Whether you are looking to better understand coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation (AFib), heart failure, hypertension, high cholesterol, carotid artery disease, chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, or preventive cardiology, our goal is to help you make informed decisions about your cardiovascular health.

Our practice provides comprehensive cardiology and vein care for patients throughout Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Miramar, Hallandale Beach, Davie, Cooper City, Weston, Aventura, and surrounding South Florida communities. By offering both heart and vein services in one practice, we are able to evaluate symptoms that may have multiple causes and develop personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs.

The information below is designed to answer many of the most common questions we hear in our office. While these answers are intended to educate and guide you, they should not replace an evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional. If you are experiencing new or concerning symptoms—or if you have questions about your heart, circulation, or vein health—we encourage you to schedule a consultation with the experienced team at Cardiac & Veinworx. Early evaluation, accurate diagnosis, and timely treatment are often the best ways to protect your long-term cardiovascular health.

Choosing the right cardiologist or vein specialist is one of the most important healthcare decisions you can make. Patients throughout Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Miramar, Hallandale Beach, Davie, Cooper City, Weston, Aventura, and surrounding South Florida communities choose Cardiac & Veinworx because we provide comprehensive cardiovascular and vein care under one roof.

Our team specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart disease, coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation (AFib), heart failure, high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol, peripheral artery disease (PAD), carotid artery disease, heart palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, leg swelling, chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, and spider veins.

One advantage of combining cardiology and vein care is that many symptoms can have more than one cause. Leg pain, leg swelling, poor circulation, fatigue, dizziness, or shortness of breath may be related to your heart, your arteries, your veins, or another medical condition. Evaluating the entire cardiovascular system allows us to make a more accurate diagnosis and recommend the treatment that best fits your needs.

We offer advanced cardiovascular testing in our office, including electrocardiograms (EKGs), echocardiograms, cardiac rhythm monitoring, Holter monitors, stress testing, vascular ultrasound, carotid ultrasound, and peripheral artery disease (PAD) evaluations. Providing these services in one practice helps simplify your care while reducing unnecessary referrals and delays.

Most importantly, we believe great medical care starts by listening. We take the time to understand your concerns, explain your diagnosis in plain language, answer your questions, and develop a personalized treatment plan focused on improving your heart health, circulation, and quality of life.

If you're looking for an experienced cardiologist or vein specialist in South Florida, we invite you to schedule a consultation and discover why so many patients trust Cardiac & Veinworx with their cardiovascular health.

What Symptoms Should Never Be Ignored Because They Could Indicate Heart Disease?

Heart disease doesn't always begin with dramatic symptoms. In many people, the earliest warning signs are easy to dismiss or blame on getting older, being out of shape, or simply having a busy lifestyle. Recognizing these symptoms early can lead to earlier diagnosis, more treatment options, and better long-term outcomes.

Symptoms that deserve medical attention include chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, dizziness, fainting, unexplained fatigue, leg swelling, or pain that spreads to the jaw, neck, shoulder, back, or arm. These symptoms can be caused by coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation (AFib), heart failure, heart valve disease, peripheral artery disease (PAD), or other cardiovascular conditions.

Not everyone experiences symptoms the same way. Women, older adults, and people with diabetes are more likely to have less typical symptoms such as unusual fatigue, nausea, or shortness of breath without severe chest pain. That's one reason heart disease can sometimes be difficult to recognize.

While these symptoms don't always mean you have a heart problem, they should never be ignored—especially if they are new, becoming more frequent, or interfering with your normal activities. A cardiovascular evaluation can often determine whether your symptoms are related to your heart, circulation, lungs, or another medical condition.

If you develop severe chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, loss of consciousness, or symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, call 911 immediately.

3

When Should Chest Pain Be Evaluated by a Cardiologist?

Chest pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical attention, but not every episode is caused by heart disease. Discomfort can come from the heart, lungs, muscles, ribs, stomach, or even anxiety. The challenge is that symptoms alone can't always tell the difference.

Chest pain related to coronary artery disease is often described as pressure, tightness, squeezing, heaviness, or burning in the chest. It may spread to the jaw, neck, shoulder, back, or arm and may occur with shortness of breath, nausea, sweating, dizziness, or unusual fatigue. These symptoms should never be ignored.

Your evaluation depends on your symptoms and cardiovascular risk factors. A cardiologist may recommend an electrocardiogram (EKG), echocardiogram, stress test, cardiac rhythm monitoring, or other testing to determine whether your symptoms are related to blocked arteries, a heart rhythm problem, heart valve disease, or another condition.

Many cases of chest pain turn out not to be related to the heart, but it's far better to identify a non-cardiac cause than to miss a potentially serious cardiovascular problem.

If your chest pain is severe, lasts more than a few minutes, or occurs with shortness of breath, fainting, or other symptoms of a heart attack, call 911 immediately.

4

Who Is at High Risk for Heart Disease?

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, and many people have no symptoms until they develop chest pain, shortness of breath, a heart attack, or stroke. Understanding your risk factors is one of the most important steps in preventing cardiovascular disease.

Your risk is higher if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, a family history of heart disease, or a history of smoking. Risk also increases with age, physical inactivity, sleep apnea, and vascular conditions such as peripheral artery disease (PAD) or carotid artery disease.

The encouraging news is that many of these risk factors can be improved. Controlling your blood pressure and cholesterol, managing diabetes, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and avoiding tobacco can significantly reduce your risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart failure, and stroke.

Even if you feel perfectly healthy, a preventive cardiovascular evaluation may be worthwhile if you have several risk factors.

Identifying problems early often provides more treatment options and can help prevent serious complications before symptoms develop.

5

What Are the Warning Signs of a Heart Attack?

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart is suddenly blocked, preventing oxygen from reaching the heart muscle. Getting medical treatment quickly can limit permanent heart damage and save your life.

The most recognized symptom is chest pain or pressure, but a heart attack can also cause discomfort that spreads to the jaw, neck, shoulder, back, or arm. Other warning signs include shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, cold sweats, dizziness, lightheadedness, or sudden unexplained fatigue. Women, older adults, and people with diabetes may experience these symptoms without severe chest pain.

Most heart attacks are caused by coronary artery disease, which develops as cholesterol plaque builds up inside the arteries that supply blood to the heart. As blood flow becomes restricted, the risk of a heart attack increases.

If you think you or someone else may be having a heart attack, call 911 immediately. Do not wait to see if the symptoms improve or try to drive yourself to the hospital. Every minute counts, and early treatment can save heart muscle, improve recovery, and save lives

6

Why Am I Short of Breath?

Shortness of breath can happen for many reasons, but it should never be ignored—especially if it's new, getting worse, or limiting activities that were once easy. While asthma, allergies, or other lung conditions are common causes, heart disease is another important possibility.

Several cardiovascular conditions can make breathing more difficult, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation (AFib), heart valve disease, cardiomyopathy, and high blood pressure. Some people notice they're short of breath only when walking, climbing stairs, or exercising, while others develop symptoms when lying flat or even while resting.

Because heart and lung problems often produce similar symptoms, it's important to determine the underlying cause rather than guess. Depending on your symptoms and medical history, your cardiologist may recommend an electrocardiogram (EKG), echocardiogram, stress test, or cardiac rhythm monitor to evaluate your heart function and circulation.

If your shortness of breath comes on suddenly, is severe, or occurs with chest pain, fainting, or symptoms of a heart attack, seek emergency medical care immediately. Early evaluation can often identify the cause and help prevent more serious cardiovascular complications.

7

What Causes Heart Palpitations?

Heart palpitations are the sensation that your heart is racing, fluttering, pounding, or skipping beats. They're very common and, in many cases, are harmless. However, they can also be a sign of an abnormal heart rhythm that deserves medical evaluation.

Palpitations may be triggered by stress, anxiety, caffeine, dehydration, lack of sleep, certain medications, or thyroid problems. They can also be caused by atrial fibrillation (AFib), premature atrial contractions (PACs), premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), or other cardiac arrhythmias.

Because palpitations often come and go, your cardiologist may recommend an electrocardiogram (EKG), Holter monitor, event monitor, or cardiac rhythm monitor to capture your heartbeat while symptoms are occurring. An echocardiogram may also be performed to evaluate your heart's structure and function.

Occasional palpitations are usually not dangerous, but if they're accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, or loss of consciousness, you should seek immediate medical attention.

8

Why Am I Always So Tired? Could It Be My Heart?

Everyone feels tired from time to time, but ongoing fatigue or a noticeable loss of energy shouldn't simply be accepted as part of getting older. While poor sleep, stress, anemia, or thyroid problems are common causes, fatigue can also be an early sign of heart disease.

When your heart isn't pumping efficiently because of coronary artery disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, heart valve disease, or cardiomyopathy, your body may not receive enough oxygen-rich blood during everyday activities. You may find yourself slowing down, becoming winded more easily, or feeling exhausted after activities that used to be routine.

Persistent fatigue is even more concerning when it's accompanied by shortness of breath, chest pain, heart palpitations, dizziness, or leg swelling. These symptoms may indicate an underlying cardiovascular condition that deserves evaluation.

A thorough cardiovascular assessment can help determine whether your symptoms are related to your heart or another medical condition and identify the most appropriate next steps.

9

Why Are My Legs Swollen?

Leg swelling, also called edema, is a common symptom that can have many different causes. Sometimes it's related to standing or sitting for long periods, but it can also be a sign of a problem with your veins, heart, or circulation.

Common cardiovascular causes include chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, heart failure, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Swelling in both legs is often associated with vein disease or heart conditions, while sudden swelling in one leg may suggest a blood clot and requires prompt medical attention.

Your evaluation may include a physical examination, vascular ultrasound, venous reflux study, echocardiogram, or other testing to determine whether the swelling is related to vein disease, heart disease, or another medical condition. Finding the cause is the key to choosing the right treatment.

If one leg suddenly becomes swollen, painful, warm, or red—especially if you also develop shortness of breath—seek emergency medical care immediately.

10

How Do I Know If I Am at Risk for a Stroke?

Many strokes can be prevented by identifying and treating the conditions that increase your risk before symptoms ever develop. In fact, many of the same risk factors that contribute to heart disease also increase the risk of stroke.

Your risk is higher if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, atrial fibrillation (AFib), carotid artery disease, coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease (PAD), or a history of smoking. Obesity, sleep apnea, and a family history of stroke or cardiovascular disease can also increase your risk.

Many people with carotid artery disease have no symptoms until they experience a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke. Depending on your risk factors, your cardiologist may recommend a carotid ultrasound, heart rhythm monitoring, or other cardiovascular testing to better assess your risk and determine whether treatment is appropriate.

If you suddenly develop facial drooping, arm weakness, difficulty speaking, vision loss, severe dizziness, or trouble walking, call 911 immediately. Rapid treatment can reduce permanent brain injury and significantly improve the chances of recovery.

11

Should I Have My Heart Checked Even If I Feel Healthy?

Yes—especially if you have risk factors for heart disease. Many people with coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or even atrial fibrillation (AFib) feel completely healthy until they experience a heart attack, stroke, or another serious cardiovascular event.

A preventive cardiovascular evaluation may be appropriate if you have diabetes, a family history of heart disease, a history of smoking, obesity, sleep apnea, or you're over 40 and have never had your heart health evaluated. Even if you exercise regularly and feel well, identifying cardiovascular risk early can help prevent problems before symptoms develop.

Depending on your age, medical history, and overall risk, your cardiologist may recommend an electrocardiogram (EKG), echocardiogram, stress test, heart rhythm monitor, or other testing. Not everyone needs every test—the goal is to recommend the right evaluation for the right patient.

Preventive cardiology isn't about looking for problems that aren't there. It's about identifying risk early, protecting your heart, and helping you stay healthy for years to come.
